The Impact of Digital Technologies

Technology has the potential to make the world more equitable, peaceful, and just. Digital innovation can play a major role in advancing all 17 Sustainable Development Goals—from eliminating extreme poverty and lowering maternal and infant mortality to supporting sustainable agriculture, decent employment, and universal education. However, these same technologies can also pose risks, such as invading privacy, weakening security, and increasing inequality. They also raise important concerns about human rights and individual autonomy. As with past generations, governments, businesses, and individuals must decide how to responsibly develop and use these tools.

A Digital Future for Everyone?

Digital technologies have spread faster than any previous innovation, reaching about half of the population in developing regions within just twenty years and reshaping societies. By improving connectivity, expanding financial access, and enhancing trade and public services, technology can act as a powerful equalizer.
In healthcare, for example, AI-driven innovations are saving lives, improving diagnostics, and extending lifespans. In education, online learning and virtual classrooms have made knowledge accessible to people who previously lacked opportunities. Public services are also becoming more transparent and efficient through technologies like blockchain and AI. Additionally, big data allows governments to design more accurate and responsive policies.
Despite these advances, many people still lack access to digital tools and are falling further behind. These groups often include women, older adults, people with disabilities, minority communities, indigenous populations, and those living in remote or impoverished areas. In some cases, connectivity growth has slowed or even declined. For instance, worldwide, women are still less likely to use the internet than men, and this gap has widened in the least developed countries.
Another concern is that algorithms can reproduce or even worsen existing biases if they rely on incomplete or unbalanced data. A lack of diversity within the tech industry can make it harder to identify and correct these issues.

The Future of Work

Technological revolutions have always reshaped the job market—creating new roles while making others obsolete. The current wave of innovation is expected to bring major changes. For example, the International Labour Organization estimates that transitioning to a green economy could generate 24 million new jobs by 2030 through renewable energy, electric vehicles, and energy-efficient infrastructure.
At the same time, research from organizations like McKinsey & Company suggests that up to 800 million jobs could be lost due to automation by 2030. Many workers are concerned they lack the skills needed for future employment.
To address this, education systems must evolve—placing greater emphasis on STEM subjects, soft skills, and lifelong learning. People will need continuous opportunities to reskill and adapt. Additionally, unpaid responsibilities such as childcare and eldercare must receive more support, especially as populations age.

The Future of Data

Today, digital tools like AI and data analytics are widely used to monitor agriculture, healthcare, and environmental conditions, as well as to handle everyday tasks like navigation and payments. While these technologies can help protect human rights, they can also threaten them—for example, through surveillance of personal activities.
Governments and companies now have powerful capabilities to collect and use data. However, with proper regulation, personal data could become an asset controlled by individuals. With the right safeguards, data-driven technologies can enhance well-being, empower people, and promote universal rights.

The Future of Social Media

Social media platforms connect nearly half of the world’s population, allowing people to communicate instantly and share their voices globally. However, they can also spread misinformation, reinforce biases, and deepen divisions by amplifying echo chambers.
While these platforms can contribute to social fragmentation, they also hold the potential to foster understanding and unity—depending on how they are managed.

The Future of Cyberspace

Managing the rapid growth of digital technologies is an ongoing global challenge, especially amid rising geopolitical tensions. António Guterres has warned about a potential “great fracture” between major powers, each developing its own internet systems, AI strategies, and economic rules. This division could result in a fragmented digital world, sometimes described as a “digital Berlin Wall.”
As a result, international cooperation in the digital space is becoming increasingly important. Establishing shared standards for security, human rights, and sustainable development is essential for maintaining a unified global cyberspace. A worldwide commitment to digital cooperation has been identified as a key priority for ensuring a stable and inclusive digital future.
