One of Tallahassee’s most distinctive features is its canopy roads—peaceful stretches where centuries-old oaks, pines, hickories, and sweet gums reach across the pavement, draped in Spanish moss, to form shaded green corridors. There are nine officially recognized canopy routes, together spanning over 78 miles, each offering a glimpse of both natural beauty and local history.

Northeastern Routes

Centerville Road & Moccasin Gap Road Starting where Magnolia Drive concludes, this drive is quickly enveloped by leafy shade. It passes through quiet countryside and ends at Bradley’s Country Store, famous for its handmade sausage and small-town charm.
Miccosukee Road Once used as a Native American trail, this nearly nine-mile road is bordered by towering oaks and thick moss. In the 1800s, it was a vital path for transporting cotton to market.
Old Centerville Road Dating back to the early 1800s, this old wagon road connected plantations with trade centers and the railroad. Today, it retains its rustic feel, with clay paths, scattered homes, and dense canopies.
Sunny Hill Road Historically one of the old routes stretching outward from the city, Sunny Hill linked plantations to settlements near Georgia. Its red clay banks, shaded overhangs, and historic family burial sites tell the story of its past.
Pisgah Church Road Although only about a mile long, this short road is steeped in heritage. Likely originating when Pisgah United Methodist Church was established, it’s now lined with rolling fields and mossy oaks.

Northwestern Routes

Meridian Road Surveyed in 1824 as part of establishing Florida’s Prime Meridian, this road runs in a strikingly straight line. In some sections, it cuts through high earthen ridges, a reminder of its early construction.
Old Bainbridge Road Running close to U.S. 27, this historic road passes through areas once occupied by Native American villages and the site of a Spanish mission from the 1600s, blending cultural history with scenic beauty.

Southeastern Route

Old St. Augustine Road Once connecting Tallahassee to St. Augustine, this path follows ancient trails used long before Florida’s statehood. Though the old mission structures are gone, the road is still shaded by its natural archways and echoes with stories of the past.

Travel Pointers

Be mindful: many sections run alongside private land.
Take your time: slower speeds allow you to fully enjoy the shade and scenery.
Use a map: downloadable maps make navigation easy.
Best lighting: early mornings, late afternoons, or cloudy days bring out the textures of moss and trees.
