As the largest fish species on Earth, whale sharks can grow to lengths of 40 feet (12 meters) or more. With their enormous size, it may seem like they would need a massive amount of food, but their diet is surprisingly small. Unlike many large marine predators, whale sharks mainly feed on plankton.
These gentle giants swim near the ocean surface with their huge mouths open, collecting tiny plants and animals from the water. Along with plankton, they may also accidentally consume small fish and other tiny marine organisms that happen to be nearby.

Filter Feeding

Similar to the basking shark, the second-largest fish in the world, whale sharks are specialized filter feeders.
When feeding, a whale shark opens its enormous jaws and moves through the water, allowing large amounts of seawater to enter its mouth. Special filtering structures then separate food particles from the water before the remaining water flows back out.
Scientists believe whale sharks use a feeding method known as cross-flow filtration, a process also found in some bony fish and baleen whales.

Physical Characteristics

Whale sharks have a broad, flattened head with a wide mouth located near the front of the body. Small sensory organs called barbels extend near their nostrils.
Their skin is usually gray to brown and covered with a unique pattern of pale vertical and horizontal stripes combined with white spots. Their underside is much lighter, typically appearing white.
Unlike many sharks, their two dorsal fins are positioned farther back along the body. Their powerful tail ends in a large crescent-shaped caudal fin with two distinct lobes, helping them move efficiently through the water.

Distribution and Population

Whale sharks prefer warm tropical waters and can be found throughout many tropical oceans around the world.
Each year, many individuals migrate to areas such as the continental shelf off the central western coast of Australia, especially near Ningaloo Reef. During seasonal coral spawning events, large amounts of plankton become available, creating an ideal feeding opportunity for these giant fish.
Despite their enormous size, whale sharks are calm and harmless animals. They are known for their gentle behavior and sometimes allow swimmers and divers to observe them at close range.
However, whale sharks are currently classified as a vulnerable species. Although protected in many areas, they are still hunted in some regions, including parts of Asia such as the Philippines.
