Hedgehogs have become increasingly popular as exotic pets in recent years. However, before deciding to add one of these unique animals to your household, it is important to understand their special care requirements and natural behaviors.
According to Dr. Krista Keller, a veterinarian at the University of Illinois Veterinary Teaching Hospital in Urbana and a board-certified specialist with the American College of Zoological Medicine, learning about hedgehogs beforehand is essential for providing them with a healthy and comfortable life.
Although wild European hedgehogs are commonly seen exploring gardens across the United Kingdom and other regions, the hedgehogs typically kept as pets are African pygmy hedgehogs, scientifically known as Atelerix albiventris.
Hedgehog Diet and Living Environment
In their natural habitat, hedgehogs consume a diverse diet that includes insects, plants, roots, and other small food sources. Recreating this exact diet in captivity can be difficult, so a specially designed hedgehog or insectivore food is usually the best option.
A balanced commercial hedgehog diet can be supplemented with occasional treats such as mealworms, crickets, fruits, and vegetables. These additional foods provide variety while helping meet the animal’s nutritional needs.
Despite their round appearance, hedgehogs are active and energetic animals. In the wild, they may travel several miles each night and are capable climbers and swimmers. Pet hedgehogs therefore require enough space to exercise, explore, and perform natural behaviors.
Their enclosure should be large enough to hold an exercise wheel and provide room for searching and exploring. It should have smooth walls to prevent escapes and include a sheltered area where the hedgehog can sleep during the day. A minimum enclosure size of around 2 feet by 3 feet is recommended, and large plastic storage containers can sometimes serve as practical housing options.
Temperature control is also extremely important. Because hedgehogs originate from warm tropical regions, their enclosure should include a reliable external heat source, such as an under-tank heater or heat lamp, along with multiple thermometers to monitor temperature levels.
The ideal temperature range for pet hedgehogs is approximately 75 to 85 degrees Fahrenheit. If conditions become too cold or too warm, hedgehogs may enter a state known as torpor, where their activity and body functions slow significantly.
Hedgehog Activity Patterns
Hedgehogs are nocturnal animals, meaning they are awake and most active during the night. They typically sleep throughout the daytime and begin their active period in the evening.
Their schedule often matches the time when people are finishing dinner or relaxing before bedtime, making evening hours a good opportunity for interaction.
However, their nighttime habits can create challenges. Exercise wheels can produce considerable noise, so placing the enclosure in a bedroom may not be ideal. Exercise wheels should also have solid surfaces rather than wire bottoms, as wire designs can cause serious injuries such as broken or fractured legs.
Many pet hedgehogs struggle with obesity because they do not receive enough activity. Providing opportunities for movement is essential. Owners should allow supervised time outside the enclosure for exploration or swimming several times each week to encourage healthy exercise.
Building Trust and Handling Hedgehogs
Hedgehogs are naturally solitary creatures and should generally be housed alone. In the wild, they only interact closely with others during the breeding season.
Their independent nature means they may take time to become comfortable with humans. Developing trust requires patience, consistency, and gentle handling.
Dr. Keller explains that hedgehogs obtained from breeders at a young age are often easier to socialize, although individual personalities can vary.
When bringing a new hedgehog home, owners should allow the animal several days to adjust to its new surroundings without excessive handling. Once the hedgehog becomes comfortable, gentle interaction can begin during nighttime hours when the animal is awake.
Handling should focus on helping the hedgehog become familiar with human scent and touch. Since frightened hedgehogs may bite, slow and gradual socialization is important for creating a positive relationship.
Hedgehog Veterinary Care
Like all companion animals, hedgehogs require regular veterinary attention. Annual health examinations help identify possible problems early and improve the chances of successful treatment.
After adopting a hedgehog, owners should schedule a veterinary visit to check for internal parasites and external parasites such as mites. Routine examinations are an important part of maintaining long-term health.
Hedgehogs can develop various health issues, including certain cancers and heart-related conditions. Regular checkups and early detection can help them maintain a good quality of life.
Female hedgehogs are especially vulnerable to uterine tumors, which can become life-threatening. For this reason, Dr. Keller recommends spaying female hedgehogs as a preventive measure because it removes the risk of developing these reproductive diseases.
Lifespan and Responsible Hedgehog Care
With proper nutrition, suitable housing, regular exercise, and appropriate medical care, a pet hedgehog can live for approximately five years, with some individuals reaching more than eight years.
Owning a hedgehog requires commitment and preparation, but providing the right environment and care can allow these fascinating animals to become healthy and rewarding companions.

Men’s Business Casual 2025: The Ultimate Guide to 14 Dress Code Styles
Men’s business casual is a sartorial paradox—equal parts “professional” and “relaxed,” it’s a dress code that has baffled white-collar workers for decades, yet remains a cornerstone of modern office style. Named after the Canadian electro-funk duo Chromeo’s album (a confusing coincidence), business casual walks a tightrope between formality and comfort, replacing the rigidity of full suits with versatility while avoiding the sloppiness of loungewear. As Josh Sims, author of Men of Style, notes: “It’s one of those nonsensical dress codes like smart-casual that created bewilderment first, but it also revolutionized men’s workplace attire—paving the way for the breakdown of strict office dress codes over the past 20 years, especially post-tech boom.” In an era where Mark Zuckerberg can sport jeans and sliders to the office, business casual still holds relevance: it’s not about dressing down, but dressing right—balancing professionalism with personality, no matter your industry. This guide breaks down the key pieces, styling tips, dos and don’ts, and FAQs to master business casual in 2025.
