It has been about half a year since we relocated to Seattle, and the experience has been quite a journey. During this time, I was focused on adjusting to pandemic conditions while also settling into a new city, a new job, and a completely different outlook on life.
I admit I was absent from blogging for a while. There simply wasn’t much to share about travel when most of life was confined indoors. Now that things are slowly improving, I’m returning to writing while enjoying Seattle’s bright summer weather.
I originally wrote this account in March 2020, just before public spaces began closing due to COVID-19. I saved it in drafts because it didn’t feel appropriate at the time to talk about tourism while the world was shutting down. Looking back, I’m glad we managed to experience Seattle’s most iconic attraction during our first free weekend in the Pacific Northwest.
Visiting the Space Needle
We were fortunate to visit the Space Needle on a clear late-winter day, with very few visitors around. We took careful precautions throughout the visit, avoiding unnecessary contact with surfaces, washing hands frequently, and keeping distance from others whenever possible.
Although it is known as a major tourist destination with high ticket prices, the experience turned out to be absolutely worthwhile.
Views from Above the City
Standing at 520 feet (160 meters), the observation deck sits high enough that looking through the glass floors felt slightly intimidating. The view straight down toward the city below created a strong sense of height and space.
We spent nearly two hours at the top, simply taking in the scenery. We also enjoyed a meal of fish and chips while overlooking Seattle’s skyline, Puget Sound, nearby islands, Elliott Bay, and distant mountain ranges including the Olympics, Cascades, Mount Rainier, and Mount Baker.
Although it was cold on the open-air viewing deck, the sunlight reflecting off the water made the atmosphere feel warm and calm, even as uncertainty filled the outside world.
Design and Experience of the Space Needle
The Space Needle was originally built for the 1962 World’s Fair under the theme “The Age of Space.” Its futuristic design continues to represent Seattle’s innovative and forward-looking identity.
After a major renovation in recent years, the structure feels modern, clean, and welcoming. One of the most memorable features is The Loupe, a rotating glass floor that allows visitors to look directly down through the structure while it slowly turns, revealing changing perspectives of the city below.
Chihuly Garden and Glass
After finishing our visit to the Space Needle, we continued to the nearby Chihuly Garden and Glass exhibition, which is often included with the same ticket package.
Although it is a relatively small exhibit, it left a strong impression. The displays feature large, colorful glass sculptures shaped like plants and flowers, creating a vivid and imaginative environment that is especially enjoyable for photography and slow exploration.
Visiting in a Changing Time
As I write this in late August, the Space Needle has reopened with limited capacity as part of Washington’s phased reopening plan. If you are considering a visit, it is best to plan ahead, purchase tickets in advance, and follow all safety guidelines in place.
Despite the unusual circumstances, visiting this landmark remains a memorable experience and offers a unique perspective over Seattle’s landscape.
