The Industrial Revolution laid the foundation for the rise of modernism. By the late 19th century, advances in the mass production of glass, steel, and concrete opened the door to a new chapter in architectural history. Buildings began to favor simple forms, clean lines, and restrained aesthetics. The development of reinforced concrete also made it possible to create building façades and structural forms that had previously been impossible.

Modern high-rise architecture soon began reaching unprecedented heights and proportions. The ornate stucco decoration and massive brick structures associated with earlier architectural traditions gradually gave way to lighter and more functional designs. The great works of modernism continue to stand out for their groundbreaking ideas, technological innovation, and instantly recognizable forms.

5. Grand Central Terminal

New York

New York's renowned Grand Central Terminal was constructed between 1903 and 1913. Its design was developed by the architectural firms Warren & Wetmore and Reed & Stem, both of which were strongly associated with the Beaux-Arts tradition. Although the station initially reflected historicist architecture rather than the modern style, its designers gave traditional ideas a new interpretation.

The elaborate ceiling paintings and decorative stucco in the enormous main concourse recall the grandeur of the Baroque period. At the same time, modern innovations such as electric illumination, electrified railway lines, and the prominent use of steel signaled a transition toward a new architectural age.

Compared with their historical counterparts, the building's forms and ceiling artwork were also noticeably more restrained. Grand Central Terminal remains an important landmark in architectural history and continues to demonstrate how traditional design could be transformed through modern technology and ideas.

4. Casa Batlló

Barcelona

Casa Batlló is the result of a major renovation project carried out at the beginning of the 20th century. Between 1904 and 1906, architect Antoni Gaudí completely reworked both the building's exterior façade and its interior spaces. Through this transformation, he introduced a distinctive organic approach to architecture.

Gaudí is widely regarded as one of the leading figures of Catalan Art Nouveau. At this prominent location in Barcelona, he redesigned five adjoining residential buildings according to his newly developed architectural vision. Casa Batlló became one of the clearest examples of his imaginative approach to shape, color, and ornament.

Gaudí's most famous project, the Sagrada Familia, remains unfinished, but his work on Casa Batlló continues to represent an important milestone in the development of his architectural style.

3. Villa Dirickz

Brussels

Architect Marcel Leborgne designed this four-story villa for the entrepreneur Dirickz, who moved into the property with his family in 1933. The building marked an important step toward modern architecture in Belgium, combining influences from the Bauhaus movement with elements of Art Deco.

One of the villa's most striking features is its exterior spiral staircase. Constructed from smooth reinforced concrete and rising approximately 15 meters, the staircase creates a dramatic connection between the garden and the rooftop sun terrace.

Despite its emphasis on simplicity and essential forms, Villa Dirickz was not designed to sacrifice comfort or luxury. Its spacious interior and high-quality features provided the residents with an elegant living environment. Rounded details and crisp geometric forms work together to give the villa its distinctive modern character.

2. Fagus Factory

Alfeld

The Fagus Factory in southern Lower Saxony was designed in 1911 by architect Walter Gropius together with his colleague Adolf Meyer. Originally constructed as a factory for producing shoe lasts, the building became one of the early examples of European modernist architecture and was placed under heritage protection in 1946.

Its extensive use of glass curtain walls represented a major departure from conventional factory design at the time. The building also employed a pioneering skeletal structural system, which created new architectural possibilities and later became an important feature of modern construction.

Through the Fagus Factory, Walter Gropius helped establish a new direction in architectural design. He later became one of the founders of the Bauhaus movement. Along with influential architects such as Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, Frank Lloyd Wright, and Le Corbusier, Gropius is regarded as one of the key pioneers who shaped modern architecture.

1. Empire State Building

New York

The Empire State Building in New York was constructed in only one year, from 1930 to 1931, and quickly became one of the world's most recognizable buildings. The project was designed by the New York architectural firm Shreve, Lamb and Harmon. Since no skyscraper of this particular height had previously been constructed, the architects had no direct precedent to rely on when developing the design.

Standing at a total height of 443 meters, the Empire State Building remained the world's tallest building until the completion of the World Trade Center in 1972. Designed in the Art Deco style, the skyscraper features a steel structural frame and an exterior clad in limestone and granite. More than 6,000 individual windows form part of its distinctive façade.

Today, the Empire State Building remains one of New York's defining landmarks and plays a major role in the city's famous skyline. Its unmistakable silhouette has appeared in countless Hollywood movies and has become associated with celebrations, tourism, and popular meeting places. More than simply a skyscraper, it stands as one of the most recognizable symbols of modern architectural achievement.
