Ocean Exploration Technology
What motivates astronomers to wonder, “What exists beyond us?” and oceanographers to ask, “What secrets lie beneath the waves?” Although oceans cover about 71 percent of Earth’s surface, humans have explored only around 5 percent of them. Today, more than at any other time in history, advanced tools and technologies are giving scientists greater opportunities to investigate the deepest parts of the ocean and the vast reaches of outer space.

The Development of Oceanography
Oceanography is a multidisciplinary science that combines geology, biology, chemistry, physics, and engineering to study the ocean and its many processes. Compared with many other scientific fields, oceanography is relatively new.
The beginning of organized oceanographic research is often linked to the H.M.S. Challenger Expedition, which took place from 1872 to 1876. This historic voyage was the first major scientific mission dedicated to collecting detailed information about ocean temperatures, chemical properties, ocean currents, marine organisms, and the geology of the seafloor.
The Growth of Modern Ocean Exploration
Modern oceanography developed significantly during World War II, when the U.S. Navy sought a deeper understanding of the ocean to improve communication across the Atlantic and support submarine operations.
By the late 1950s and 1960s, underwater exploration was transformed by the introduction of submersibles, which allowed scientists to study areas of the ocean that had previously been unreachable.
Today, researchers use a wide range of advanced technologies to investigate marine environments. Buoys and water sampling systems help monitor ocean surface conditions and water quality, while coring equipment collects samples from the seabed. Sonar technology is used to create detailed maps of underwater landscapes, and remotely operated vehicles (ROVs) enable scientists to explore deep ocean regions safely and effectively.
As exploration continues and technology improves, scientists gain a better understanding of how oceans operate and how they contribute to supporting life on Earth.
The Study of Space Through Astronomy
Astronomy is also an interdisciplinary science, but its focus is on studying objects and phenomena beyond Earth’s atmosphere. Recent breakthroughs in space technology have greatly expanded the possibilities within this field.
New telescopes, spacecraft, satellites, and exploration missions have allowed scientists to observe distant planets, stars, galaxies, and other cosmic structures with greater detail than ever before.
Technology Transforming Exploration
Safety, affordability, and efficiency remain major considerations in both ocean and space exploration. Over time, exploration methods have shifted from relying mainly on human-operated vehicles to using more advanced automated systems.
Today, satellites, remotely operated vehicles, planetary probes, and robotic rovers play essential roles in gathering information. Improvements in remote sensing, satellite communication, scientific instruments, and real-time video transmission allow researchers around the world to collaborate and exchange discoveries instantly.
These technological developments have made it possible to explore environments that were once considered unreachable while reducing risks for human explorers.
The Future of Ocean and Space Discovery
Even with today’s impressive technological progress, countless mysteries remain undiscovered. The future direction of ocean and space exploration is difficult to predict, but continued innovation will likely reveal discoveries beyond our current imagination.
Dr. Robert Ballard offered an inspiring perspective on future exploration, noting that the generation of students currently in middle school may explore more of Earth than all previous generations combined. The possibilities ahead demonstrate that humanity’s journey of discovery is far from complete, and future explorers will continue uncovering the hidden wonders of our planet and the universe.

Red-winged Starling: The Striking Starling of South Africa
Starlings often get a pretty bad reputation, and much of that negative image probably comes from the Common Starling. Across large parts of its introduced range, the species is considered an invasive pest. In places where Common Starlings have not been introduced, Common Mynas have frequently filled a similar role. These birds are also invasive and can cause considerable problems, and their taxonomic relationship with starlings does not exactly help the group’s public image.
