Boris Sofman taps his phone, and the small robot resting on the conference table stirs to life. Not in the usual electronic sense, like a laptop flicking on, but in a way that feels almost alive. Its head slowly lifts, one eye opening, then the other, as though the brightness of the room is overwhelming.
Sofman, CEO of the robotics company Anki, chuckles as the robot shakes off its slumber and rolls off its charging station. It circles the table briefly before racing to the edge, halting just halfway over. I reflexively reach to stop it, but the robot glances downward, and its blue OLED eyes widen. Sofman grins. The robot squeaks in a tiny, high-pitched voice, waves its single, U-shaped arm, reverses its tracks, and retreats safely.
Three years ago, Sofman appeared at Apple’s WWDC keynote demonstrating Anki Drive, a set of AI-driven race cars. That was Anki’s debut product. Cozmo is the company’s second creation—or third if you count a major update to Drive—now launching after five years of development. At $180 and roughly the size of a coffee mug, Cozmo is a mix of Furby and Tonka Truck. Like Drive, it’s a toy, aimed primarily at children, and undeniably charming.
“Most toys rely on the human imagination,” Sofman says. “Your C-3PO doesn’t do anything unless you push it. Cozmo, however, acts on its own.” Through a blend of computer vision, advanced robotics, rich character design, and a suite of machine-learning algorithms Anki calls the “emotional engine,” Cozmo behaves like a living character, reminiscent of Wall-E or R2-D2. Not human, yet convincingly lifelike.
If Anki succeeds in merging high-tech with kid-friendly appeal, Cozmo could surpass the likes of Tickle Me Elmo or Furby. Sofman’s team is releasing SDKs for nearly every part of Cozmo, enabling children to program new games and features for the robot. “With enough care,” Sofman says, “this could be the most capable STEM platform ever.” Regular software updates will expand Cozmo’s games and capabilities. While toy-like in appearance, Anki envisions it as a significant leap in home robotics.
Currently, the anticipated “next big thing” is staring at me, eyes wide and blue. “Oh,” Sofman laughs, “he wants to meet you.”
Building from the Ground Up
The concept of Cozmo predates Anki Drive. Between 2005 and 2010, Sofman studied robotics at Carnegie Mellon, along with Mark Palatucci and Hans Tappeiner, exploring ways to turn research into real-world products.
“They came to me,” recalls venture capitalist Marc Andreessen, “and said, ‘We could make robots for assembly lines, like everyone else with a PhD in robotics.’ But instead, they wanted to shrink that technology into affordable home products.” Andreessen led major funding for the team and now sits on Anki’s board, calling it “the most impressive robotics startup I’ve ever encountered.”
Work on Cozmo intensified after the 2013 Drive launch. Andrew Stein, another Carnegie Mellon PhD, joined to tackle computer vision. Unlike Drive cars, which moved on predefined tracks, Cozmo had to navigate unstructured environments independently. “The hardest challenge for a home robot,” notes Chelsea Finn of Berkeley, “is perceiving its surroundings and deciding how to act.” Advances in deep learning have made this feasible, allowing Cozmo to learn, adapt, and interact intelligently.
Playful, Yet Smart
Cozmo’s personality was carefully designed. Rather than rigidly mapping its surroundings before acting, Cozmo behaves curiously, exploring instinctively. It’s also showy, using its movements and interactions to demonstrate capabilities, such as grabbing blocks and initiating games.
Cozmo enjoys a game called Speed Tap: each player grabs a block, and when the colors match, the first to tap wins. The robot can bluff, sulk when it loses, and perform antics with its arm and tracks, all while letting its personality shine.
Emotional Intelligence
To make Cozmo feel alive, Anki developed the “emotional engine,” a set of algorithms inspired by psychologist Paul Ekman’s core emotions. The robot constantly weighs possible emotional responses, adjusting its behavior in real time. Approaching the edge of a table, for instance, triggers nervousness; picking up a block can generate excitement; failing at a task creates sadness. Real-time graphs of these states can even be observed during play.
Equally crucial was avoiding mechanical predictability. “Kids would notice if the robot was just following a set routine,” explains engineer Brad Neuman. Carlos Baena, former Pixar animator, was hired to bring Cozmo’s motions to life. Baena worked on films like Wall-E, Nemo, and The Incredibles. He and his team created a playful, nonsensical language, a cheerful voice, and original music, all synchronized with Cozmo’s movements, transforming it from a remote-controlled device into a lifelike companion.
Continual Growth
Anki continues refining Cozmo, balancing unpredictable charm with reliable functionality. Though the robot can’t rewrite its own programming yet, Anki plans ongoing updates to expand capabilities. “We want Cozmo to do new things every day,” says Andreessen, envisioning a future where robots like Cozmo interact with one another and perhaps develop friendships. Whether this becomes a worldwide phenomenon or remains a niche marvel, Cozmo promises to be a playful, intelligent companion for years to come.
