This guide introduces the main attractions, activities, and accommodation options available in Capitol Reef National Park and the surrounding region. It also includes helpful travel resources and links to additional websites for visitors planning a trip to this remarkable area.

Overview of Capitol Reef National Park

The name Capitol Reef comes from the park’s distinctive landscape. The large white sandstone domes resemble the architecture of government capitol buildings, while the long, rugged cliffs create obstacles for travelers similar to ocean reefs.

The park’s most significant geological feature is the Waterpocket Fold, a nearly 100-mile (161-kilometer) long monocline that represents a massive wrinkle in the Earth’s surface. This geological formation is the defining feature of Capitol Reef and creates much of the park’s dramatic scenery.

Beyond the Waterpocket Fold, visitors can explore a wide variety of natural formations, including arches, sandstone domes, towering cliffs, deep valleys, slickrock landscapes, and narrow rock chimneys. The park also contains diverse wildlife and historic cultural sites, making it one of the most impressive national parks in Utah.

Regions of the Park

Capitol Reef National Park is divided into three primary areas: the Fruita Historic District, the South District (Waterpocket District), and the North District (Cathedral Valley District).

The Fruita Historic District is located near the center of the park along Highway 24 and is the easiest area to access. Because of its convenient location and concentration of attractions, it receives the majority of visitors.

The North and South Districts are much more isolated and require more preparation. Many roads in these areas are unpaved, and visitors may need vehicles with high ground clearance or four-wheel drive capabilities to safely explore them.

Activities and Attractions

Scenic driving and hiking are the two most popular activities in Capitol Reef National Park. The park offers numerous trails and viewpoints where visitors can experience its unique geology and landscapes.

The area also preserves historical structures from early Mormon settlers, including the Fruita Schoolhouse, the Farm Implement Set, and the Gifford House. These sites provide insight into the lives of the communities that once lived in the region.

Evidence of even earlier inhabitants can be found through ancient petroglyphs carved into canyon walls. Another interesting destination is the Ripple Rock Nature Center, which is especially enjoyable for families traveling with children.

Getting to Capitol Reef National Park

Most visitors traveling to Capitol Reef arrive through one of three major cities with international airports: Salt Lake City, Utah; Las Vegas, Nevada; or Denver, Colorado.

Traveling from Salt Lake City, Utah

Capitol Reef National Park is approximately a 3.5-hour drive from Salt Lake City. The typical route follows Interstate 15 south, then continues along Route 50 and Route 24 toward the park.

Traveling from Las Vegas, Nevada

The park is about a 5-hour drive northeast from Las Vegas. The usual route follows Interstate 15 northeast, then Route 20 east, Route 89 north, Route 62 northeast, and finally Route 24 east.

Visitors who plan to include Zion National Park in their itinerary can take Interstate 15 northeast to Route 9, visit Zion, and then continue east on Route 9 before connecting with Route 89 north, Route 62 northeast, and Route 24 east toward Capitol Reef.

Traveling from Denver, Colorado

From Denver, Capitol Reef is slightly more than a 6.5-hour drive. The most direct route follows Interstate 70 west and then turns south onto Route 24.

Travelers who want to visit additional Utah attractions can make a detour to Arches National Park and Canyonlands National Park. One option is to take Route 128 or Route 191 south toward Moab, explore the parks, then return north on Route 191 to Interstate 70 before continuing west toward Capitol Reef.

Where to Stay Inside the Park

The primary lodging option within Capitol Reef National Park is the Fruita Campground. The park also offers two basic primitive campgrounds located in more remote areas.

Because Fruita Campground is highly popular and often reaches full capacity during the summer season, visitors are encouraged to reserve campsites well in advance. Reservations can be made through Recreation.gov up to six months before arrival.

Each campsite includes a picnic table and a fire ring or grill, but there are no electrical or water hookups. The campground provides a dump station, drinking water, and flush toilets, but shower facilities are not available.

Accommodation Options Nearby

Visitors who prefer to stay outside the park can find hotels, campgrounds, and RV parks along Highway 24. Nearby communities offering lodging options include Hanksville to the east and Fremont, Loa, Bicknell, Torrey, and Grover to the west.

These towns provide convenient bases for exploring Capitol Reef while offering a wider range of services and amenities.

Additional Travel Resources

Recreation.gov provides detailed information about Capitol Reef National Park, including maps, photographs, regulations, entrance fees, and facility details. Visitors can also use the website to reserve certain accommodations and pay applicable fees.

VisitUtah.com offers a comprehensive visitor guide with information about tours, activities, attractions, lodging, transportation options, and other useful travel planning details.

Secrets of the Incredible Green Sea Turtle and the Urgent Fight to Save It

The green sea turtle stands out as the absolute largest species among all hard-shelled marine turtles. Unlike their omnivorous or carnivorous relatives, adult green sea turtles are highly unique because they live primarily as herbivores, consuming vast quantities of seagrasses and marine algae. On rare occasions, they might supplement this plant-based diet with sea sponges, various small invertebrates, or discarded fish scraps when they happen to encounter them. Interestingly, the common name of this creature does not stem from the coloration of its external shell, but rather from the distinctly green tint of its internal fat layer. Early observers believed this unusual internal coloration was entirely due to their specialized vegetarian diet, though modern researchers now know that other marine turtle species can also possess greenish subdermal fat.
