Waterbucks are the largest members of their antelope family. Belonging to the genus Kobus within the Bovidae family, these impressive animals dominate the sub-Saharan African landscapes. Adult males typically weigh around 262 kg (578 lbs), while females are slightly smaller at roughly 214 kg (472 lbs).
Male waterbucks are especially recognizable for their long, spiraled horns that curve backward and upward, making them impossible to miss. Often called the “aquatic antelope,” waterbucks possess numerous unique traits that make them a fascinating species to study. Here are seven interesting facts about them:

1. Named for Their Love of Water

Waterbucks are closely associated with water. They prefer habitats near rivers, lakes, and wetlands, including savannas, gallery forests, and riverine woodlands. Unlike many other antelopes, waterbucks are strong swimmers, using water not only for grazing but also as a means to evade predators. Their main threats include hyenas, lions, cheetahs, and African wild dogs. Enthusiasts have even reported waterbucks swimming between islands to escape danger.

2. Distinctive White Rings on Their Rear

Waterbucks have striking white rings around their rumps. While amusing myths exist, the most plausible explanation is that these rings serve as a “follow me” guide for the herd. Since waterbucks live in groups, the ring helps individuals track each other and flee quickly if danger arises. Tourists also use this feature to distinguish waterbucks from other antelope species.

3. Only Males Grow Horns

Waterbuck males are the sole bearers of horns. Their horns are widely spaced and elegantly curve backward and upward, often reaching lengths of up to 100 cm (40 inches), seemingly disproportionate to the size of their heads. These horns are used as weapons during fights between rival males competing for territory or mates, which can sometimes lead to severe injuries or death.

4. Their Fur Has a Strong Odor

Waterbucks produce a pungent smell from their fur, which serves multiple purposes. It helps attract mates, deters competitors, and even discourages predators. While hunting waterbucks for meat is common in some areas, their stinky fur can render the meat almost inedible if it comes into contact with the animal’s coat.

5. Herds Typically Contain 6–30 Individuals

Waterbucks are primarily grazers, feeding on grasses and leaves. Food availability often forces them to move frequently, and they typically form herds ranging from 6 to 30 animals. Each group is led by an alpha male, who guides the herd’s movements and protects them from predators.

6. Polygamous Breeding Behavior

Waterbucks are polygamous breeders. The oily, strong-smelling secretion from their fur not only offers protection but also signals reproductive readiness. Female waterbucks release this scent, known as “greasy Kob,” to notify the alpha male when they are ready to mate. Mating patterns vary by location; in equatorial regions, reproduction occurs year-round, with males switching partners each breeding season.

7. Two Main Recognized Varieties

Although there are around 13 subspecies of waterbucks, only the common waterbuck (Kobus ellipsiprymnus ellipsiprymnus) and the Defassa waterbuck (Kobus ellipsiprymnus defassa) are widely recognized. These two varieties share similar habitats, and when their ranges overlap, they interbreed freely. Waterbucks typically live up to 20 years in the wild.

Understanding Your Sleepy Cat

Cats spend a significant portion of their day sleeping—on average, about 12 to 13 hours daily. Senior cats may sleep even more, and much of this rest happens during daylight hours. While it might seem that cats are the ultimate nappers among mammals, some animals, such as koalas, bats, and opossums, actually sleep even longer.
