1.United Arab Emirates

Our first stop is the amazing United Arab Emirates, home to the incredible One Za’abeel building in Dubai. This unique architectural marvel is one of the most fascinating projects we’ve seen. The building features the longest cantilever in the world, stretching an impressive 226 meters across the skyline. Weighing 9,500 tons, the structure, known as the "Link", is suspended above a busy highway. The project, which began in 2014, has finally been completed, marking a new era in skyscraper engineering. The main towers will house luxurious offices, apartments, and a hotel. The Link will also feature Michelin-starred restaurants, swimming pools, and observation decks, offering stunning views of the city and the Persian Gulf. Designed by the Japanese architectural firm Nikken Sekkei, this building truly represents Dubai’s ambition to create the most extraordinary structures in the world.

2.Australia

Next, we head to Australia, where we find the long-awaited Queensland Performing Arts Centre (QPAC) in Brisbane. This distinctive theater is designed to resemble a massive glass aquarium, with fluted glass facades, expansive open spaces in the foyer, and a design that prioritizes transparency. The theater space, lined with natural wood, can accommodate 1,500 spectators for a variety of performances, including ballet, opera, and musicals. Designed by Snøhetta and Australian designer Blight Rayner, the building’s flowing glass facade is inspired by the natural shape of the Brisbane River. While the project was initially slated to open in 2022, delays pushed back the premiere. The $120 million venue promises to be a major cultural hub, attracting an even larger audience to QPAC’s performances, which already draw about 300,000 visitors annually.

3.USA

Our journey continues in Denver, USA, where the newly completed Populus Hotel stands as a striking example of eco-friendly design. Inspired by nature, the building’s façade mimics the aspen tree bark found in the local region, with a white color and intricate, uneven shape. The 13-story structure is designed to be environmentally responsible, featuring low-carbon concrete to reduce its carbon footprint. Urban Villages, the hotel’s developers, boast that this is the first hotel in the world with positive carbon emissions. In addition, the company plans to sponsor the planting of thousands of acres of forest. The Populus Hotel not only provides a sustainable lodging experience but also contributes to the global effort to combat climate change.

4.China

Next, we travel to China, where Huizhen High School in Ningbo, Zhejiang Province, has won the prestigious 2023 Building of the Year award. This remarkable school, designed by Approach Design and engineers from Zhejiang University of Technology, shatters traditional ideas of what a school can be. The campus, designed as a "floating forest," features classrooms resembling tree branches connected by winding paths, while treehouses offer students a peaceful place to relax between classes. A sloped roof serves as a recreational park and open-air lecture hall, with a sports space available for students during the week and open to the public on weekends. The school’s design encourages free thinking and provides students with a space to relieve stress and explore the traditional concept of education from a new perspective.

5.China (Continued)

Moving to the southwestern part of China, we find the stunning Science Fiction Museum in Chengdu, Sichuan Province. Designed by Zaha Hadid Architects, the building is shaped like a spaceship that has seemingly landed in the middle of a lake. The floating museum features a dynamic roof inspired by mountains, with cantilevered arches rising above seamless glass panels. The museum’s design looks different from every angle, offering new perspectives and architectural techniques with each view. Despite its expansive 59,000 square meters of space, the museum was completed in just 12 months, a remarkable achievement for a project of this scale. The building incorporates sustainable design elements, including photovoltaic panels on the roof, which help generate electricity. The design of the roof and canopies also serves to provide shade in the summer and allow natural light to filter through the building, while the drop-shaped hatch in the center is the only point where natural sunlight enters, creating a stunning effect. The museum’s design is not only visually captivating but also functional, with every detail carefully planned to enhance the visitor experience.
These extraordinary buildings—from Dubai’s One Za’abeel to the floating Science Fiction Museum in Chengdu—showcase the incredible possibilities of modern architecture. They represent not only technical innovation but also a commitment to sustainability and creating spaces that inspire both visitors and inhabitants alike.
