Eggs offer a powerhouse of essential nutrients—some of which, like choline, are scarce in many modern diets.
They deliver protein, healthy fats, and a wide range of vitamins and minerals, all while being relatively low in calories.
When included as part of a well-balanced eating pattern, eggs can contribute to better overall health—including cardiovascular and eye health.
Here’s a breakdown of what makes eggs a valuable addition to your meals.

Nutrient-Rich Powerhouses

Eggs are exceptionally nutrient-dense, packing nearly every essential vitamin and mineral your body needs in one compact form.
A single hard-boiled egg contains:
  • Vitamin A: 8% of your daily needs
  • Folate: 6%
  • Vitamin B5: 14%
  • Vitamin B12: 23%
  • Vitamin B2: 20%
  • Phosphorus: 7%
  • Selenium: 28%
You’ll also find moderate levels of vitamin D, B6, E, calcium, and zinc—all in about 78 calories, with 6 grams of protein and 5 grams of fat.
Eggs from pasture-raised or omega-3-supplemented hens typically have higher amounts of vitamins A and E, plus a greater omega-3 content.

Cholesterol Content Doesn’t Affect Everyone the Same Way

While eggs are relatively high in cholesterol (about 186 mg per egg), dietary cholesterol doesn’t always increase blood cholesterol for everyone.
Your liver produces cholesterol naturally. When your dietary intake rises, the liver often compensates by making less.
Some individuals experience little to no rise in blood cholesterol from eating eggs, while others may notice more significant changes—especially those with genetic conditions like familial hypercholesterolemia or APOE4 gene variants.

Can Boost HDL — The “Good” Cholesterol

HDL, or high-density lipoprotein, helps remove excess cholesterol from the bloodstream. Higher HDL levels are often linked with reduced risks of heart attacks and strokes.
Several studies have found that moderate egg intake—about one per day—can raise HDL levels while lowering LDL in some cases. However, the impact varies depending on individual metabolic responses.
If you have cholesterol concerns, consult your healthcare provider about how eggs might fit into your diet.

Rich in Choline — A Crucial, Often Overlooked Nutrient

Choline plays a key role in forming cell membranes and supporting brain function.
While your body makes small amounts of it, many people still fall short of optimal intake. Pregnant individuals and those with certain genetic factors are at greater risk of deficiency.
A single egg supplies about 147 mg of choline, making it one of the best dietary sources available.

May Lower Heart Disease Risk in Some Individuals

LDL cholesterol, commonly called the “bad” cholesterol, comes in various particle sizes. Smaller, denser LDL particles are more harmful than larger, fluffier ones.
Some research suggests that eggs tend to shift LDL particle distribution toward the larger, less dangerous type, potentially lowering heart disease risk—even if LDL levels rise slightly.
However, findings are mixed. While some population studies hint at increased heart disease mortality with higher egg intake, others suggest benefits. More controlled trials are necessary to clarify this connection.

Promote Eye Health with Antioxidants Lutein and Zeaxanthin

As we age, vision often deteriorates. Two key nutrients found in eggs—lutein and zeaxanthin—help guard against this process.
These antioxidants accumulate in the retina and can lower the risk of age-related eye conditions like cataracts and macular degeneration.
Egg yolks are especially rich in both compounds. In one study, consuming a daily egg for five weeks boosted blood levels of lutein by over 25% and zeaxanthin by nearly 40%.
Eggs are also a good source of vitamin A, a deficiency of which is a leading global cause of preventable blindness.

Omega-3 Eggs May Help Reduce Triglycerides

The nutritional profile of an egg depends largely on the hen’s diet. Birds fed omega-3-enriched or natural pasture diets lay eggs with significantly higher omega-3 levels.
Omega-3 fats are known to reduce blood triglycerides, a marker linked to cardiovascular risk.
Small studies have shown that regularly consuming omega-3-fortified eggs can reduce triglyceride levels by around 10% over several weeks.

Excellent Source of Complete Protein

Protein is essential for building and repairing tissues and supporting bodily functions.
Eggs contain high-quality protein and all nine essential amino acids in optimal proportions. One large egg offers about 6 grams of protein.
Getting enough protein may aid in:
  • Reducing body fat
  • Enhancing muscle development
  • Stabilizing blood pressure
  • Strengthening bones

Help Control Appetite and Support Weight Loss

Eggs are satisfying and can help regulate calorie intake by promoting feelings of fullness.
They rank high on the satiety index, a scale measuring how well foods suppress hunger.
In one trial, people who ate eggs for breakfast consumed significantly fewer calories at lunch compared to those who ate cereal-based meals.
Regular egg consumption has also been linked to a lower risk of excessive abdominal fat—a key indicator of metabolic risk.

How to Draw Whales

I’ve spent countless hours on the water, from cold northern seas to warm tropical bays. My goal has always been the same: to draw whales. Not the simplified cartoon versions you see in children’s books, but real whales—the massive bodies, the raw strength, the scars that record their lives. For a long time, my drawings felt lifeless and flat. I eventually realized I wasn’t just drawing an outline; I was trying to represent a living creature shaped by the physics of the ocean itself.

Essential Truths Regarding the Milky Way

While the cosmos contains an estimated two trillion galaxies, the Milky Way stands out as a remarkable entity. In a universe dominated by small, dim collections of stars, massive spiral galaxies like ours are actually quite rare. These smaller "dwarf" galaxies often act as the structural components for larger systems, frequently being drawn toward their more massive neighbors. Currently, researchers have identified nearly 60 of these diminutive galaxies circling the Milky Way, with many more likely hidden from our current view.
