Khiva, Uzbekistan: the Mysterious City at dawn
Walking through the narrow stone-paved lanes of Khiva’s historic walled city at sunrise was one of the most unforgettable moments of our journey through Uzbekistan. The soft golden glow, scattered white clouds, quiet pathways, and the gentle sound of birds created an atmosphere that felt almost unreal. During these peaceful early hours, the ancient city appeared like a mysterious vision rising from the surrounding desert.

Khiva was once an important stop along the historic Silk Road. It served as a major trading center and was the final resting point for many caravans before they crossed the vast Karakum Desert. Today, the old walled city has been protected as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1990.
Experiencing the Silence of Itchan Kala at Dawn
After staying overnight in a former medersa, a traditional Islamic school that had been transformed into a hotel, we set out to explore Khiva as the first light appeared.
At sunrise, the city was still quiet and nearly empty, while daily life was slowly beginning. Walking through Itchan Kala, the ancient inner city surrounded by defensive walls, felt like having the entire historic area to ourselves. This peaceful feeling was even stronger because only a small number of people actually live inside the old town, aside from the hotels and tourist facilities.
During the busy daytime hours, Khiva’s streets are filled with visitors and local activity. However, early in the morning, the only people we encountered were street cleaners preparing the roads, merchants returning from morning prayers before opening their shops, and a few travelers who had also come to enjoy the calm beauty of dawn.
The Changing Colors of the Morning Light
As the sun slowly climbed higher, the quiet streets began transforming. The first gentle rays created soft pastel shades before gradually shifting into rich copper and golden tones.
The growing sunlight illuminated the historic buildings around us, revealing the details of Khiva’s remarkable architecture and making the entire city glow with warm colors.
Khiva’s Iconic Landmarks in the Morning Glow
The rising sunlight beautifully highlighted some of the city’s most famous monuments.
Islam Khodja Minaret
The Islam Khodja Minaret is the tallest minaret in Khiva, reaching 44.5 meters in height. Built in 1910, it is also one of the city’s newer historic towers. Its elegant shape and impressive height make it one of Khiva’s most recognizable landmarks.
Pahlavan Mahmoud Mausoleum
The deep turquoise dome of the Pahlavan Mahmoud Mausoleum stood out dramatically against the morning sky. This important religious and architectural site is admired for its beautiful tile decoration and peaceful atmosphere.
Kalta Minor Minaret
Kalta Minor is one of Khiva’s most famous symbols. Although this 19th-century minaret was never completed, its wide structure covered with turquoise and blue glazed tiles has become an unforgettable feature of the city’s skyline.
A Timeless Scene of Colors and Architecture
The soft morning light created a breathtaking contrast with Khiva’s traditional architecture. The warm ochre walls, bright blue domes, and towering minarets appeared even more striking beneath the gentle clouds floating above the city.
The combination of ancient buildings, peaceful streets, and golden sunlight created a scene that felt frozen in time. It was one of the most remarkable experiences of our journey along the Silk Road in Uzbekistan and a memory that will remain unforgettable.
