Whale sharks are the biggest fish species alive today and may even be among the largest fish that have ever existed. They inhabit warm tropical and subtropical waters around the world, often moving near the ocean’s surface as they search for food.
The largest whale shark ever recorded measured around 19 meters in length and weighed more than 15 tonnes. Despite their enormous size, whale sharks are famously known as the gentle giants of the sea. They are filter feeders rather than active hunters, so they do not chase or ambush their prey. Encounters with people are generally calm, with whale sharks often displaying a peaceful curiosity toward divers and swimmers.
Distinctive Whale Shark Patterns
Whale sharks are extremely easy to recognize because of the unusual markings covering their bodies. Their dark skin is crossed by pale horizontal and vertical lines, forming a pattern that resembles a checkerboard.
Hundreds of light-colored spots are scattered across the darker portions of their bodies, while the underside is mostly white. Their feeding method is equally distinctive. A whale shark opens its enormous mouth, takes in large quantities of seawater, and then allows tiny organisms to be separated from the water by its mesh-like gill structures. The trapped food is then swallowed.
Why So Little Is Known About Whale Sharks
Scientists still have many unanswered questions about whale sharks because studying them can be extremely difficult. Tracking living individuals is challenging, and examining dead whale sharks is also problematic.
As fish, whale sharks do not possess a bony skeleton. Instead, their internal framework is made from flexible cartilage, similar to the material found in a human nose. Cartilage generally does not preserve well as a fossil, leaving scientists with very little ancient evidence to study.
Because of these difficulties, researchers still know relatively little about whale shark mating behavior, how long they can live, and how they interact socially.
Whale Sharks Play an Important Ecological Role
Whale sharks contribute to the health of marine ecosystems by helping regulate populations of plankton and algae. If these organisms become excessively abundant, they can reduce the amount of sunlight and oxygen available in the water, potentially interfering with the balance of the ecosystem.
Whale sharks also provide shelter and feeding opportunities for other marine animals. Various smaller fish consume parasites living on their skin and often remain close to the sharks, where their proximity can offer protection from other predators.
What Is the Scientific Name of the Whale Shark?
The scientific name of the whale shark is Rhincodon typus. It is the only species belonging to the genus Rhincodon.
Scientists generally place this genus in its own family, although some classifications have historically included whale sharks within the Orectolobidae family, which contains the carpet sharks.
Are Whale Sharks Endangered?
Whale sharks are classified as endangered on the IUCN Red List, and their populations are continuing to decline.
They face numerous threats, including collisions with ships and other vessels, accidental capture as bycatch, targeted and incidental fishing, finning, tourism-related pressures, and the effects of climate change.
The IUCN currently gives whale sharks a recovery score of 29%. This indicates that the species is considered to be nearly one-third of the way toward full recovery. Full recovery would mean that the species is once again present, healthy, and carrying out its ecological role throughout its natural range.
Where Do Whale Sharks Live?
Whale sharks have a circumtropical distribution, meaning they occur in warm tropical waters around much of the planet. Their enormous range stretches across the Indian, Atlantic, and Pacific Oceans and includes waters belonging to many different countries.
Their southern distribution reaches waters near the southern tips of Africa and Australia. Toward the north, whale sharks can be found as far as the waters off the coasts of Boston and New York.
Beyond these northern and southern limits, ocean temperatures become too cold for whale sharks to thrive.
