Helen, Georgia

This delightful Bavarian-style town was transformed in 1969 through a beautification and tourism project designed to revive the community and draw more visitors. Situated about an hour and a half northeast of Atlanta, Helen hosts a seven-week Oktoberfest celebration, making it one of the longest-running events of its kind in the United States.

Visitors can enjoy numerous parades, live performances, polka music, and traditional waltzing. Along the town’s cobblestone streets, roughly 200 shops sell items such as cuckoo clocks, handmade fudge, quilts, and dolls. The local dining scene combines Appalachian flavors with Alpine traditions, offering generous servings of smoked pork chops, corned beef, and peach beer. Outdoor activities are plentiful as well, including zip-lining, tubing, fly-fishing, and horseback riding.

Vail, Colorado

Positioned at the foot of Vail Mountain, this scenic community is famous for activities such as skiing, snowboarding, golf, fishing, and hiking. Its colorful storefronts, European-inspired buildings, and mountain scenery create an atmosphere reminiscent of a Bavarian alpine village.

Guests can stay at the Arrabelle at Vail Square, where chalet-style buildings feature clock towers and ornate rooftops. Take a leisurely walk through pedestrian-friendly Lionshead Village, then warm up beside the fireplace while enjoying a glass of schnaps at Alpenrose Restaurant. Vail’s Oktoberfest is held across two weekends and includes live German music, bratwurst-eating competitions, and beer keg bowling.

Fredericksburg, Texas

Founded by German immigrants during the 1840s, Fredericksburg combines a fascinating past with a welcoming small-town atmosphere and modern attractions. Visitors can explore four notable museums devoted to the early settlers of the Texas Hill Country or join a walking tour highlighting Fredericksburg’s distinctive German heritage. The town is also home to numerous wineries, breweries, and restaurants serving traditional German-inspired foods, including smoked meats and bratwurst.

When Oktoberfest arrives, Fredericksburg’s central square takes on the appearance of a lively Bavarian celebration, complete with live polka performances. Another traditional event is the annual Gillespie County Bundes Schützenfest, a historic German-style marksmanship competition. Its champion receives the title Schützenkönig, or King of Marksmen, and keeps the honor until the following year’s contest.

Germantown, Tennessee

Germantown, one of Nashville’s oldest neighborhoods, takes its name from the European immigrants who settled there during the middle of the 19th century. In 1979, the neighborhood was officially recognized as a National Register Historic District.

Today, the area features historic landmarks, attractive independent shops, and restaurants operated by acclaimed chefs. Each year, Germantown hosts Nashville’s Oktoberfest, where visitors can experience live entertainment, locally brewed beer, bratwurst-eating contests, and the 5K Bier Run.

Leavenworth, Washington

Surrounded by the beautiful Cascade Mountains, Leavenworth in central Washington adopted its distinctive German-inspired character through a community planning effort during the 1960s. The transformation followed the decline of the local logging and sawmill industries.

The town features alpine-style chalets decorated with flower boxes and surrounded by mountain scenery, while Front Street is filled with German food and beer. Visitors can also enjoy hiking, skiing, boating, and birdwatching. Other unusual attractions include the Nutcracker Museum, Bavarian-themed miniature golf, and a life-sized gingerbread house.

Leavenworth’s Oktoberfest stretches across three weekends and features well-known German bands and traditional dancing. During the holiday season, the town also holds its popular Christmas Lighting Festival, complete with Christmas carolers, elaborate lights, and Santa costumes representing traditions from around the world.

Frankenmuth, Michigan

For travelers looking for a German-inspired destination with a relaxed getaway atmosphere, Frankenmuth is known as “Michigan’s Little Bavaria.” At the Frankenmuth Historical Museum, visitors can learn about the community’s German heritage and discover how the town was established to provide spiritual support for German settlers in the Midwest.

There are plenty of activities for families and visitors to enjoy, from horse-drawn carriage rides through town and scenic riverboat cruises to learning how to make traditional German pretzels by hand. Guests can also experience Bavarian-style blacksmithing. With German-themed festivals and activities, a waterpark, and the world’s largest Christmas store, Frankenmuth offers attractions throughout the year.
