If you want to experience a complete collection of karst stone forest landscapes in one destination, Yunnan’s Stone Forest is the ideal place. It is recognized as the only subtropical plateau karst stone forest of its kind anywhere in the world.

This guide introduces what you can see in the area and provides useful travel information for planning a visit.

Main Scenic Zones of the Stone Forest

The Stone Forest Scenic Area is extensive, but the sections most visitors refer to are the Greater Stone Forest and the Lesser Stone Forest. These two areas form the core experience of the attraction.

The Greater Stone Forest Area

The Greater Stone Forest section is famous for its dense concentration of towering limestone pillars. The rock formations are tightly packed together, creating a natural labyrinth-like environment.

The shapes of the stones vary widely, with some resembling upright swords while others look like animals or human figures. The overall atmosphere feels both majestic and mysterious.

Exploring this area usually takes more time due to its size and the complexity of its pathways. It is also the busiest part of the scenic zone, with more developed visitor facilities.

For families visiting with children, this area is particularly engaging. Kids can observe the massive stone formations up close and feel the textures of the rock surfaces.

Behind the main section, Liziyuanjing is less crowded and features smaller, lower stone formations that are easier to explore freely. Children can move between formations like a natural maze.

Visitors can also climb Wangfeng Pavilion, which is relatively easy even for young children, offering a wide panoramic view of the surrounding landscape.

The Lesser Stone Forest Area

Compared to the Greater Stone Forest, the Lesser Stone Forest has a more open layout with wider spacing between rock formations.

The stones here are still unusual in shape but appear softer and more elegant overall. One of the most well-known features is the Ashima rock, which resembles a Yi ethnic girl and is linked to a local legend.

This area provides a calmer and more natural atmosphere, making it suitable for visitors who prefer quiet walking and scenic relaxation. The presence of vegetation adds a greener and more refreshing feel.

However, many of the formations here are fenced off, meaning close-up interaction with the rocks is more limited than in the Greater Stone Forest.

Walking and Transportation in the Stone Forest

Exploring the Stone Forest primarily involves walking. Sightseeing shuttle vehicles are available to connect different sections of the park.

The amount of walking depends on your preferences. Active visitors can climb steps, explore elevated viewpoints, and enter cave-like formations.

The Greater Stone Forest requires more physical effort due to stairs and uneven paths. In contrast, the Lesser Stone Forest is flatter and more suitable for strollers and wheelchairs.

Even elderly visitors or those with limited mobility can still enjoy the area, as there are multiple accessible routes and no requirement to climb.

Naigu Stone Forest: A Quieter Alternative

Most tourists visiting Kunming go to the Greater and Lesser Stone Forests, making those areas quite crowded during peak seasons.

For a more peaceful experience, Naigu Stone Forest is an excellent alternative. Located about 8 kilometers from the main scenic areas, it is older and far less crowded.

This area features sharp stone formations, karst caves, a large waterfall, open grasslands, and a distinctive black volcanic stone pathway.

Between September and November, visitors may also see flower fields blooming across the landscape, adding extra color to the scenery.

Recommended Visit Duration

A half-day visit is generally enough to explore both the Greater and Lesser Stone Forest areas.

The best time to arrive is usually between 9:00 and 10:00 in the morning when visitor numbers are lower, though afternoon visits are also suitable.

Day Trip Possibility from Kunming

A day trip from Kunming to the Stone Forest is very practical.

Transportation between the city and the scenic area is convenient, especially when using private transfers.

However, for those who want a deeper experience of the karst landscape and local ethnic culture, staying overnight nearby can be a better option.

Transportation from Kunming

The Stone Forest is located in Shilin Yi Autonomous County, approximately 77 kilometers east of Kunming.

By public transport, travelers can take a coach from Kunming East Bus Station (about 1.5 hours) or a high-speed train to Shilin County (about 40 minutes), followed by a bus or taxi to the scenic area. The full journey takes around two hours or more.

For families or travelers seeking convenience, private transportation is the easiest option. The drive takes about 1.5 hours directly from the hotel, often including a guide who provides explanations and insights during the visit.

Best Season to Visit

The most favorable time to visit the Stone Forest is during spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November), when temperatures are mild and conditions are comfortable for outdoor sightseeing.

Summer (July to August) is warmer and more humid, but the landscape becomes lush and vibrant due to rainfall. Visitors should prepare for occasional showers.

Winter (December to February) is quieter and still relatively mild, with daytime temperatures generally between 10°C and 15°C. However, vegetation is less dense, so the scenery is not as colorful as in other seasons.
