The Amur leopard, sometimes called the Far Eastern leopard, is considered the rarest big cat in the world. As a leopard subspecies, it inhabits the forested border region stretching across the Russian Far East and China. Classified as critically endangered, the Amur leopard is the focus of conservation efforts involving WWF, local communities, regional and national authorities, and other conservation organizations. These efforts aim to protect the species and secure the long-term health of the surrounding ecosystem.
Here are some common questions and answers about these remarkable cats.
1. How Fast Can Amur Leopards Run?
Like other leopard subspecies, Amur leopards are capable of reaching speeds of up to 37 miles per hour. They are also remarkably agile, with the ability to jump more than 19 feet horizontally and as high as 10 feet vertically.
2. Where Do Amur Leopards Live?
Amur leopards inhabit the Amur Heilong Landscape, a large region that extends across Russia’s Far East and neighboring parts of China. This uncommon leopard subspecies has adapted to survive in the temperate forests found at the northern edge of the leopard’s overall geographic range.
3. How Many Amur Leopards Remain in the Wild?
Through sustained and coordinated conservation work, wild Amur leopard numbers in Russia have shown significant growth. Over the past 15 years, the estimated population there has risen from approximately 27–32 animals to around 70–75. China has also documented an increase, with an estimated 13–15 individuals recorded in provinces bordering the leopard’s Russian range.
4. How Are Amur Leopards Different From Other Leopards?
Amur leopards generally have a lighter-colored coat than many other leopard subspecies. Their coats are marked by large, dark rosettes that are widely spaced and feature thick, continuous rings. Adults weigh approximately 70–105 pounds.
These leopards are especially well suited to the severe winters of the Russian Far East. During the colder months, they develop a dense coat that can reach about 7 centimeters in length, helping them withstand the region’s harsh climate.
5. What Threats Do Amur Leopards Face?
One major threat to Amur leopards is illegal hunting for their attractive spotted fur. The animals also face shortages of natural prey. Species such as roe deer, sika deer, and hares are hunted by local communities for food and income, reducing the amount of prey available to leopards.
Loss of suitable habitat is another serious challenge. As their forest environment is reduced or altered, Amur leopards have fewer places in which to live, hunt, and reproduce.
6. How Do Amur Leopards Raise Their Cubs?
Female Amur leopards typically give birth to between one and four cubs. The young are generally weaned when they reach about three months of age.
In some cases, males remain with females after mating and may participate in raising the cubs. Young leopards usually separate from their mothers when they are approximately one and a half to two years old. Brothers and sisters may continue to stay in contact with one another during the first part of their independent lives.
7. What Is Being Done to Protect Amur Leopards?
A major conservation milestone came in 2012, when the Russian government established Land of the Leopard National Park as a protected refuge for the species. Covering approximately 650,000 acres, the park contains much of the Amur leopard’s breeding territory and roughly 60% of its remaining habitat.
The protected area also provides habitat for 10 endangered Amur tigers. WWF had advocated for the creation of the park since 2001.
Conservation teams are continuing to monitor Amur leopard populations as animals move beyond the boundaries of the park and spread into other parts of the region. Researchers are also tracking their movements across the international border into neighboring nature reserves in China. One long-term conservation goal is the creation of a protected nature reserve spanning both Russia and China.
8. Why Are Amur Leopards Important?
Amur leopards have an important ecological role because they are apex predators. By regulating populations of other animals, they contribute to a natural balance among species within their environment.
Their presence can therefore influence the health of the surrounding forest and wider ecosystem. These ecosystems provide wildlife and people with essential resources such as food and freshwater. Protecting Amur leopard habitat also helps many other species, including endangered Amur tigers and prey animals such as deer.
9. What Sounds Do Amur Leopards Make?
Leopards are generally quiet animals, but they can occasionally produce rough, hoarse coughing sounds. These vocalizations may be used to signal their presence or communicate territorial boundaries.
Some leopards are also known to purr while they are feeding.
10. How Do Amur Leopards Hunt?
Amur leopards are powerful and highly agile predators. After making a kill, they may drag or hide the remains high in a tree, keeping the food away from scavengers and competing predators.
Leopards are widely regarded as exceptionally skilled stalkers and climbers among the big cats. Their combination of agility, climbing ability, and physical strength allows them to take down prey weighing as much as 10 times their own body weight.
